Morehead-Cain Alumni landed new jobs, received accolades, earned advanced degrees, and more. Here’s who made a move this summer.

  • Franklin Clark III ’69 delivered the graduate commencement address at Methodist University. The alumnus was a thoracic surgeon before retiring to become a real estate developer.
  • A monograph devoted to the works of Woods Davy ’72, Sculptures, was published in May.
  • Gregory Tuttle ’74 competed in the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2024 International Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, this July. The alumnus sang with Durham’s Heart of Carolina A Capella, representing North and South Carolina. The group placed twenty-sixth out of 35 choruses, the highest score the district has received. The men’s chorus, Carolina Concordia, earned a superior ranking.
  • Alan Murray ’77, former CEO of Fortune Media, received the 2024 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. The award recognizes “individuals who have made significant contributions to society, embodying the values of patriotism, diversity, and inclusion.” The alumnus was also tapped to lead the Dow Jones Leadership Institute, a new commercial venture that will seek to support C-suite executives through coaching, data and analysis, and networking.
  • Mike McIntyre ’78 received the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award in June at the North Carolina Bar Association’s annual meeting in Charlotte. The award honors an attorney who “embodies the qualities of professionalism, civility, personal integrity, the pursuit of excellence, enthusiasm for intellectual achievement, and service to the community and the profession.” The alumnus is the senior advisor for government relations and economic development at Ward and Smith in Raleigh.
  • Furman McDonald ’91 was appointed president and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the ABIM Foundation. The alumnus will begin the roles in September. Furman has practiced internal medicine for more than twenty-five years and has served ABIM as senior vice president for academic and medical affairs for the past decade.
  • Eric David ’94 and Shana Fulton ’98 of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard, LLP were sworn in to the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.
  • Daniel Aldrich ’96, professor and director of the Resilience and Security Studies program at Northeastern University, received the university’s 2023–2024 Outstanding Teaching Award.
  • Morehead-Cain Mentor Stan Oakley ’78, professor emeritus of The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, hooded his mentee, Ashish Khanchandani ’18, in May. Ashish earned his MD from ECU.
  • Tom Geddes ’00 was named to the Dwyer Workforce Development board in Baltimore. The alumnus is a portfolio manager at Brown Advisory.
  • Jamie DeMent Holcomb ’01 was named a 2024 Eisenhower Fellow. The USA Program sends ten-to-twelve mid-career leaders abroad each year to meet with experts in their respective fields in a relevant region of the world. The alumna is the CEO of Kidzu Children’s Museum in Chapel Hill.
  • Rob Gourley ’18 served as director of photography, editor, and colorist for A Harvest, a feature-length documentary released in March.
  • Mina Yakubu ’21 received the Cooke Graduate Scholarship through the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation and Graduate Achievement Scholarship through the Horatio Alger Association to attend NYU School of Law in New York.
  • Connor Díaz ’22 was accepted into the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program, along with twenty-six others from the University of Colorado Boulder. The alumnus is a PhD student in geological sciences.
  • Scott Hallyburton ’22 began a PhD program in mathematics at Carolina.
  • Takhona Hlatshwako ’22 returned to Chapel Hill to pursue a PhD in health policy and management from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health after earning two advanced degrees from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. The alumna is a member of the Royster Society of Fellows.
  • An article co-authored by Alex Mazer ’22, Analyzing Brand Strategy on an International Scale: The Sponsorship Performance Cycle in Formula One Racing, was published in the Journal of International Marketing. The research was partially funded by Morehead-Cain through the Global Perspective program. Alex is the chief of staff to the CEO at Learn to Win and a senior associate consultant at Bain & Company.
