The Lovelace Fund for Discovery grants enable scholars to say “yes” to opportunities that will accelerate their life experiences and increase their self-awareness. Scholars receive an average grant of $800, but may be as much as $8,000.

Why the Lovelace Fund for Discovery?

Morehead-Cain Scholars are imaginative and inquisitive. The Lovelace Fund for Discovery covers expenses for scholars to develop core interests, acquire and improve essential skills, and pursue innovative ideas.

What have scholars done?

Lovelace Fund grants accelerate a scholar’s trajectory. Through engaging with worldwide experts in their field, designing their own research projects into niche topics, or obtaining skills outside their degree, scholars customize their university education. Some examples include:

  • To design and build a long-term escape room on UNC’s campus (Chapel Thrill Escapes).
  • To work as an assistant chef for a day at Le Bernardin Restaurant in New York City and meet with Morehead-Cain Alumnus Josh Lee ’04, who started the New York-based rooftop urban agriculture company Green Top Farms.
  • To research support programs for refugees in the Netherlands and use the findings to inform recommendations to the New Arrivals Institute in Greensboro, North Carolina.
  • To meet with Morehead-Cain Alumni working in computing and technology to gain insights into the virtual reality and artificial intelligence industries.
  • To take Meisner Technique acting classes at the Elizabeth Mestnik Acting Studio in Los Angeles.
