Who Can Apply?

Sophomores are nominated by Morehead-Cain’s network of campus partners, including professors, department heads, and teaching assistants, as well as staff of scholarship, service, extracurricular, and cultural programs.

Morehead-Cain invites nominees to apply early in the fall semester. Transfer students are eligible through partnerships with the North Carolina Community College System and UNC Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

How Are Students Selected?

Sophomores participate in a similar selection process to high school students, but with a greater focus on how they have demonstrated character and leadership since beginning college.

All applicants submit a written application, and finalists are assessed by the Morehead-Cain Central Selection Committee at Final Selection Experience in the fall semester.

Outstanding candidates:

  • Aspire to author a unique college experience that makes the most of resources at Carolina and beyond;
  • Invest themselves in the community within and beyond the Carolina campus;
  • Demonstrate curiosity in their intellectual and classroom pursuits; and
  • Challenge themselves to learn and grow, recognizing that growth comes through discomfort.

What Does The Program Entail?

All sophomore enrollees will be Morehead-Cain Scholars with access to the same opportunities as current scholars.

Scholars can participate in all four Summer Enrichment Program experiences, receive support from a team of advisors, apply for grants through the Lovelace Fund for Discovery, and engage with Morehead-Cain’s vast alumni network.

The Foundation also provides a living stipend from the Foundation each semester.
