Ryan earned a BS with highest distinction in mathematics and a BA in chemistry, with a minor in business administration. He studied degree distribution in Erdos-Renyi random graphs as a member of the Mathematics Directed Reading Program and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Ryan was the vice president of STEM Mentorship Academy, a nonprofit organization funded by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide peer-to-peer STEM mentorship to Title I schools across North Carolina. He was a catechist and then lead catechist of high school youth ministry for three years at the Newman Catholic Center on campus. One of Ryan’s highlights during his time at Carolina was traveling to Argentina with five fellow scholars in his class for an expedition on Aconcagua, the tallest mountain outside of Asia.
