Emerson earned a BA in political science and economics with a minor in history. During his time at UNC, he was heavily involved with Carolina Fever, serving as their marketing chair in his senior year. He was also active in the Order of the Bell Tower, served as an undergraduate learning assistant in the Economics Department, and was involved throughout the Institute of Politics. Academically, he conducted research in both the Economics and Political Science Departments and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. A defining experience for Emerson was his time studying abroad in Croatia, where he helped contribute to an EU transit proposal and studied the unique sports culture in Dalmatia.
