Scholar Recruitment & Selection Officer
The Position: Assists with all aspects of the recruitment and selection process to attract and identify the most promising future leaders from all backgrounds to Morehead-Cain and UNC. The position reports to the Director of Recruitment & Selection and works closely with the entire Foundation staff to support and strengthen the Morehead-Cain experience. The Scholar Recruitment & Selection Officer will be responsible for contributing to and/or leading projects and processes to support the work of the Selections team, including recruiting, evaluating, selecting, and enrolling an extraordinary incoming cohort of scholars annually.
The successful candidate will be responsible for building relationships with school educators and administrators and engaging with students and families to attract the applicants best fit to our mission. They will be expected to work as part of a team, leverage technology and virtual tools, and effectively prioritize duties to support the goals of Morehead-Cain and the University of North Carolina in enrolling highly qualified, diverse, and inspiring young leaders from across the globe. Strong candidates will be excited to work with students and constituents from a wide range of backgrounds.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position:
- Has a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in selective admissions, college advising, or talent identification
- Enjoys working with college-bound students and undergraduates
- Brings deep curiosity about leadership potential, character, and talent identification
- Will have an interest in increasing access to higher education for exceptional young leaders from historically underrepresented groups
- Is solutions-oriented and has strong organizational and process management skills
- Possesses excellent communication, public speaking, and presentation skills
- Welcomes collaborating with others and embraces a growth mindset
- Effectively builds lasting, win-win partnerships with stakeholders
Candidates must be energetic, enthusiastic, and motivated self-starters with excellent relationship-building skills. Experience in college admissions or advising (either in a secondary school or community-based organization) is preferred, and facility with technology is desired. A bachelor’s degree is required. The job requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to work some evenings and weekends. Off campus recruitment travel is required. This position is in-person and based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The successful candidate must complete all appropriate background checks at the time of hire. Program Coordinator, Community
The Position: Morehead-Cain seeks an energetic, organized, and adaptable individual to support our aspiration to cultivate the most impactful community of scholars and alumni in the world. Working alongside an experienced team, this individual would lead the planning, management, and execution of Community events and programs and, when applicable, support other departments in the execution of their gatherings.
The Program Coordinator will be not only a key member of the Community function, but part of a broader Foundation staff that is characterized by their passion, dedication, and service to the Morehead-Cain Program.
Indicators of Success:
- Well-organized, meaningful programming, including physical and virtual gatherings, that vary in size, purpose, and setting, that our attendees perceive as impactful and worthwhile.
- Continued growth of the number of alumni invested in scholar development through the execution of existing engagement opportunities and the implementation of new ones.
- An inspired and connected alumni community characterized by the number and quality of touchpoints they have with one another, scholars, and the Foundation.
- In-depth knowledge and acquaintance with members of the Morehead-Cain community to ease the facilitation of and connection to future engagement opportunities.
- Mastery of the Morehead-Cain information systems and CRM, such that insights and trends are captured from information to inform new opportunities and address gaps in our programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute our multicity regional event series for alumni, with an eye to streamlining execution and maximizing participation by alumni across the world. Responsibilities include identifying and supporting Community hosts, coordinating pre-event communications and timeline, and ensuring seamless onsite execution.
- Lead the match process and yearlong execution of our alumni-to-scholar mentorship program, collaborating with Advising on recruitment of scholars, monthly conversation topic identification, and support of mentorship pairs as they build impactful relationships.
- Support the Director, Community Impact and Engagement on the design and delivery of additional Community initiatives such as our smaller-scale alumni reunion weekends, Homecoming and Graduation Open Houses, and larger gatherings such as our annual Final Selection Experience for scholarship finalists and our flagship triennial Alumni Forum.
- In collaboration with our community advancement directors, advance stewardship processes to maintain timely, meaningful, and accurate outreach to donors and alumni.
- Support the scholar selection process via our Finalist and Alumni Connection Experience (FACE), working to coordinate meetings between high school finalists and Morehead-Cain Alumni in their hometowns and regions.
- Capture relevant alumni interactions into our customer relationship management (CRM) tools and develop regular reports that inform our approach with alumni and increase their feelings of engagement and ownership.
- Plan Community events with an eye for excellence, working with program leads to determine objectives and requirements, and work may include venue research and procurement of vendors (i.e., catering, A/V, rentals).
- Other responsibilities as required for our team to deliver on its mission to identify, invest in, and empower a community of dynamic, purpose-driven leaders.
Qualifications:
The Program Coordinator, Community should model the personal characteristics that Morehead-Cain has sought in its scholars for the past seven decades: an innate curiosity about the world; a lifelong love of learning; a high level of energy; and exemplary character, including integrity, empathy, and optimism.
Experience:
- Candidates should have up to five (5) years of experience managing events and programs of various objectives, scales, and duration, working across various stakeholders to bring them to life; successful candidates may have experience as event planners, nonprofit programming leads, or work in alumni engagement roles with universities or scholarship foundations.
- Previous roles have included drafting meeting agendas, developing program workplans, status reports, and/or other methods for tracking progress toward goals and objectives.
- Others should describe this individual as reliable, meticulous in their planning, and calm under pressure. Their teammates can trust and depend on them.
- Physical demands: Comfortable with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and physical setup and teardown of event spaces.
Other Competencies:
- Strong communication skills and a high comfort level in interacting with fellow staff and members of our alumni community (in-person, via email, on the phone).
- An unrivaled attention to detail and love for planning, as well as organizational tools and systems.
- Ability to support events outside of normal work hours, including nights and weekends, both in Chapel Hill and other key alumni markets.
- A flair for hospitality and an effortless, upbeat client service mindset.
- Flexibility in approach, given the need to support various aspects of the Community function.
- An advanced capacity for thinking on one’s feet and responding appropriately to adverse situations.
- A superior team player, understanding that collective success is achieved through clear communication, collaboration, and timely follow-through.

- The position reports to the Director, Community Impact and Engagement and is based at the Morehead-Cain Foundation in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
