Hana Khan ’22 of Slough, England, has been named a Phillips Ambassador to pursue undergraduate studies at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.

Hana said the scholarship, which includes financial support and an academic course administered through the Phillips Ambassadors Program, will enable her to learn about a new culture and “explore South Korea through a historically-engaged lens.”

“I’m excited to embark on my adventures, and I’m particularly keen on visiting the five grand palaces of Seoul in order to gain a greater understanding of Korean history, society, and culture,” said the scholar, a double major in history and political science at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Hana is co-president of Students for Justice in Palestine and a staff contributor to the Carolina Political Review.

Founded in 2007, the Phillips Ambassadors Program provides flexible scholarships for undergraduate study abroad opportunities in Asia. There have been more than 350 Phillips Ambassadors to date.

Two other students at Carolina, Zachary McMurdie (Class of 2021) and Emily Rosario (Class of 2022), were also selected for the 2021 cohort.

A virtual reception ceremony hosted by the Phillips Ambassadors Program (through the Carolina Asia Center) took place on December 1 in partnership with UNC Study Abroad, College of Arts & Sciences, and the UNC Kenan-Flagler study abroad programs.
