Mike McIntyre ’78 awarded highest honor by North Carolina State Bar

The North Carolina State Bar has recognized Mike McIntyre ’78 of Raleigh with the John B. McMillan Distinguished Service Award.

The accolade honors individuals throughout the state who have “demonstrated exemplary service to the legal profession.”

The alumnus serves as senior advisor for government relations and economic development for Ward and Smith, P.A., a law firm with more than 35 practice groups in North Carolina. He previously served as director of government affairs for Poyner Spruill for five years in the Triangle Area.

Mike represented North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. He served nine consecutive terms from 1997 to 2015.

In 2020, the Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association recognized the alumnus with the Liberty Bell Award for his lifelong service in law within the state, and in 2019, Mike was named “Lawyer of the Year” by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly.

The former congressman was also honored by the Carolina Law Alumni Association with the Distinguished Alumni Award through the UNC School of Law. Mike earned a degree in political science from Carolina.
