To complete a year-long teaching fellowship in English at Phillips Academy Andover before applying to law school.

Jess earned a BA with highest distinction in English with a concentration in creative non-fiction writing. She also majored in intellectual history and minored in Spanish for the legal professions. At Carolina, she was president of UNC Semillas de Unidad, a writing coach at the UNC Writing Center, an intern with the Southern Oral History Program, a staff reader at Cellar Door, and an editorial intern at the Carolina Quarterly. Jess also volunteered with Apex Immigration Services, worked as a Professional Development Intern for One Schoolhouse, and took art classes at the Carrboro Arts Center. Academically, Jess completed a memoir for her senior honors thesis, taught a class on the intersection of mental health and literature, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. In her last semester at Carolina, she received the Irene F. Lee Award—the Chancellor’s award presented annually to the woman of the senior class who is judged most outstanding in leadership, character, and scholarship.
