To take a gap year while applying to medical school, which she will begin by working as the Transforming Medical Education Intern for the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges), before seeking further employment in similar health-related fields.
Avni Bannuru earned a BSPH in nutrition health and society with minors in chemistry and Spanish for the health professions. At UNC, she served as a crisis counselor for the Crisis Text Line, as the education and outreach co-chair of the Culinary Medicine Club, and as a nutrition instructor for children and community members through the Carolina Hunger Initiative. Academically, she was a Dean’s List recipient, served as the ambassador and faculty representative for her major, and has conducted undergraduate research in the Nimchuk Lab, developing novel imaging techniques to study stem cell proliferation in mutant plant embryos, on which she completed an honors thesis. Notably, she has enjoyed serving the UNC community the most as a volunteer birth doula at UNC Hospitals, supporting expectant parents and informing her future path into medicine.
