Exploring Music and Dance in Trinidad and the Dominican Republic
Terrence Wilson '10 and Stephen Crawford '10 spent the summer of 2008 studying the historical and cultural significance of music and dance in Trinidad and the Dominican Republic. While learning about the functions that music and dance play in these countries, they also learned more about themselves. In a summary of his experience, Stephen said, "In a way, I think that the obstacles and pitfalls we face during these trips is a part of what makes them so valuable. I believe that it is during times when you are uncomfortable that you grow the most."

Alaska Sea Kayaking
For his 2008 Outdoor Leadership summer, Jarrard Cole '12 completed a four-week Alaska Sea Kayaking expedition with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). "When you get such a tangible illustration of what exactly you are able to do in 28 days...When you see that you can go further on the map than you initially expected, that translates directly into just about any challenge you're going to take on in any other part of your life."

Exploring the British Raj in India
British Morehead-Cain Scholar Ed Perkins '09 spent his 2007 International Research summer traveling throughout India. With a video camera in hand, and a mind set on discovering the lingering effects of the British Raj in India, Ed chronicled his travels. He wove his travel footage into a a five-minute video that addresses not only the subject at hand, but the signifcant role the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program played in allowing him to embark on such a trip.

WAWA WASI Childcare Program—Chile and Peru
Aisha Saad '09 spent her 2007 Independent Research summer working for the WAWA WASI Childcare Program in Santiago, Chile and Lima, Peru. As an environmental sciences major, Aisha has devoted much of her studies to the environment and its affect on health. While in Chile and Peru, Aisha applied her research to field experience by examining healthcare inequality, policy making and implementation, and the overall patient experience.
In 2008, Aisha became the 24th Morehead-Cain Scholar to receive a Rhodes Scholarship. To read more about this prestigious honor, please click here.

Researching Global Health Initiatives—Switzerland and Ghana
Amit Gupta '08 spent the summer of 2007 at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, working with a bold team of international researchers on Buruli Ulcer. Buruli Ulcer is a neglected tropical disease that affects the skin and in some cases, the bone. Armed with the latest research, Amit then ventured to Ghana, where Buruli is common. In Ghana, Amit educated Ghanaians about the disease and treated those affected.

WorldTeach—South Africa
For her 2007 Public Service summer, Tiffany Dixon '10 partnered with WorldTeach in Cape Town, South Africa, where she taught life orientation skills to seventh-, eigth-, and ninth-grade students and computer skills to fourth- and fifth-grade students. WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental program that aims to enhance education in developing countries. Tiffany credits her Public Service summer with helping her to further open her mind, embrace other cultures, and discover herself.
