Bobby Evans
Bobby Evans's career in Major League Baseball began with a casual conversation with a fellow Morehead while he was still a student at UNC.
He was a sophomore, she was a senior. He was contemplating possible internships for the upcoming summer. Despite all the Foundation's great options, Evans told this fellow student, what he'd really love to do is work for the Boston Red Sox. The sage senior told him to go for it.
So, with the blessing of Foundation Director Chuck Lovelace, Evans called the Red Sox and made some connections. Then, on a business trip to Boston, Lovelace stopped in at Fenway Park and sealed the deal — Evans was in for the summer.
"I'll always be indebted to the encouraging word of a senior Morehead and to Chuck for opening a door that I didn't even know existed," says Evans.
That summer, Evans — who had always dreamt of playing in the big leagues — learned all about the organization behind the dugout. He typed up Minor League game reports, helped prepare for the amateur draft, and even ran the manual scoreboard inside Fenway’s celebrated “Green Monster.”
Although Evans never applied for a permanent position with his beloved Red Sox, that internship played well when he interviewed for a job in the Major League Baseball Commissioner's office in New York City.
Today, Evans hosts Morehead interns each summer as director of Minor League Administration for the San Francisco Giants.
"To think that I can be of some encouragement or help someone else live out a dream of working in baseball or motivate them to make a decision that arguably could set their life course, I say wow, what a privilege."
