Culture is often spoken of as an iceberg. There is a portion left above the water that is readily accessible and easily discovered (i.e. food, dress, holiday traditions), but the vast majority of culture is hidden just below the surface, requiring immersion, insight, and discovery to truly understand.
My time in China has slowly but steadily brought these subtle traditions out of obscurity.
