Someone I love likes to say, “Waiting is a little vacation.” He says it, eyes raised in mock-serenity, whenever something is making one of us crazy.
Here, though, I’ve started to take it a more literally. So many things I take for granted as being automated at home—light, hot water, heat—require a conscious human action here. Someone has to prime the pump, hit the switch or fill the tank.
